Project no. AP09260140 "Development of a biological product based on thermotolerant microorganisms for cleaning oil-contaminated soils of Western Kazakhstan"

Relevance. The growth and development of industry has now led to intensive pollution of the environment with toxic substances. Among such pollutants, one of the first places belongs to oil and petroleum products. At all stages, starting from oil exploration and production, and ending with the use of petroleum products, emissions of products into the environment occur to one degree or another, which leads to a deterioration of the environmental situation and to a negative impact on human health.
Soil pollution with oil and petroleum products is an urgent problem for Kazakhstan as well. It is known that in the oil-producing regions of Kazakhstan, the climate is sharply continental, characterized by sharp seasonal and daily temperature changes. One of the main problems of remediation of territories in a hot climate is the fact that high temperatures reduce the viscosity of oil and, thus, accelerate its diffusion deep into the ground. In addition, the evaporation of light fractions of oil at elevated temperatures leads to air pollution with toxic products, while the remaining non-volatile components with high molecular weight form films that are poorly biodegradable.
For bioremediation of oil-polluted ecosystems at elevated temperatures, it is advisable to use thermotolerant microorganisms for which a hot climate is not stressful. Such microorganisms have a shifted growth optimum compared to mesophilic ones. Therefore, the creation of biological products based on thermotolerant bacteria and their use for cleaning oil-contaminated environmental objects is a promising solution to the problem of oil pollution in arid climate.

The aim of the project is to create a biological product based on thermotolerant microorganisms for effective bioremediation of oil–contaminated soils of Western Kazakhstan.

Expected results
For 2021
The selection of effective consortia of thermotolerant microorganisms will be carried out and their destructive ability under various environmental conditions will be studied.
For 2022
The selection and optimization of the conditions for the cultivation of consortia for the creation of a biological product will be carried out.
For 2023
An assessment of the effectiveness of the created biological product in laboratory model and field conditions will be given.
