Research and production center of microbiology and virology

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Scientific and Production Center for Microbiology and Virology Limited Liability Partnership is a leading scientific organization in the Republic of Kazakhstan, developing fundamental and applied research in microbiology and virology. The center serves as a vital foundation for training highly qualified personnel and contributes to addressing pressing societal challenges through scientific research, innovation, and knowledge transfer.
Since 2013, the Center has published the specialized journal «Microbiology and Virology», whose editor-in-chief is Academician A.K. Sadanov, General Director of the Scientific and Practical Center for Microbiology and Virology. Since 2022, the journal has been included in the list of publications recommended by the Committee for Quality Assurance in Science and Higher Education of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan for publishing key research results, and since June 2026, it has been included in the first list of publications recommended by the Committee.
The journal «Microbiology and Virology» publishes review materials on fundamental and applied research in the field of microbiology, virology, biotechnology and ecology, as well as the results of scientific research and the implementation of scientific developments in practice.
  • Mission of the Center - conducting cutting-edge scientific research, developing, producing, and marketing modern biological products. We strive to implement innovative technologies, ensure the high quality and effectiveness of domestic products, promote the development of biotechnology, healthcare, agriculture, and contribute to the country's economy.
  • The main activities of the Center is the conduct of fundamental and applied scientific research in the field of microbiology and virology, the development and implementation of microbial and viral preparations for medicine, agriculture, the food industry and environmental protection, and the training of scientific personnel in the field of microbiology and virology.
  • Key strategic direction the Center's activities are to develop advanced research in the fields of microbiology, virology, and biotechnology, aimed at solving pressing problems in healthcare, agriculture, ecology, and biological safety.
  • The main areas of scientific activity of the Center:
    ·            study of the mechanisms of microbiological transformation of metals and development of technologies for purification from heavy metals using microorganisms;
    ·            development of technologies and bacterial preparations for microbiological purification of water bodies, soil and industrial waste from oil pollution;
    ·            development of microbiological plant protection products;
    ·            creation of probiotic preparations for the prevention and treatment of intestinal infections and dysbacteriosis in humans and farm animals;
    ·            search and study of new antibiotics, increasing the activity of producers of known antibiotics;
    ·            study of problems of long-term preservation of industrially valuable strains of microorganisms, increasing the activity of biologically active substances, preserving and replenishing collection funds of microorganisms;
    ·            study of the circulation processes of human, animal and avian influenza viruses, paramyxoviruses and coronaviruses in the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan;
    ·            isolation of influenza viruses, paramyxoviruses and coronaviruses from humans, animals and birds, their virological, molecular and phylogenetic analysis, study of the mechanisms of transmission of viruses from animals and birds to humans, study of the possibility of the emergence of new epidemically significant viral strains;
    ·            improvement of methods of immunodiagnostics and molecular diagnostics of viral infections, development of improved test systems for rapid diagnostics of viral infections;
    ·            study of the mechanisms of pathogenic action of viruses and their structural components on cellular structures and organs;
    ·            development of new generation antiviral vaccines using molecular and nanotechnology;
    ·            development of new immunostimulating drugs and adjuvants to increase the effectiveness of antiviral vaccines;
    ·            development of new therapeutic and prophylactic antiviral drugs of plant and microbial origin for the treatment and prevention of viral infections.
STRUCTURE OF THE CENTER
The LLP «Scientific and Production Center for Microbiology and Virology» comprises two research divisions: the Microbiology Department and the Virology Department. The Microbiology Department comprises five laboratories, and the Virology Department comprises four laboratories, conducting fundamental and applied research in the Center's core areas of expertise.
The Center's facilities include modern, high-tech equipment, enabling it to conduct a wide range of microbiological, virological, genetic, molecular biological, and physicochemical studies.
The Center has 132 employees, including 8 doctors of science, 23 candidates of science, 18 doctors of philosophy (PhD), and 48 master's degree holders. Currently, 19 PhD students and 6 master's degree holders are studying at the Center. A significant portion of the staff is made up of young scientists: 85 specialists are under 40 years of age.

The collection of articles for issue 1 (2025) of the journal "Microbiology and Virology" is ongoing


The journal «Microbiology and Virology» is included in the List of publications recommended by the Committee for Quality Assurance in the Field of Science and Higher Education of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan for publication of the main results of scientific activity from March 2022 by Order No. 48 of 10/22/2022.


The journal publishes materials on a wide range of topics on fundamental and applied research in the fields of microbiology, virology, biotechnology and ecology, as well as scientific developments and the results of introduction of new biopreparations. Publication of an article in the journal is paid. The price for one page is 3000 tenge.
