Laboratory of Virus Ecology
The Laboratory of Virus Ecology was organized in 1956 . The laboratory employs 10 employees, including one Doctor of Sciences, two candidates of sciences, four NS, one MNS, 2 laboratory assistants with higher education.
Kydyrmanov Aydin Isagalievich – Head of the laboratory, Doctor of Veterinary Sciences (specialty 16.00.03 – veterinary microbiology, virology, epizootology, mycology with mycotoxicology and immunology).
He is the organizer of large-scale field and laboratory experimental studies on isolation of strains of ortho- and paramyxoviruses of birds and mammals from natural biocenoses, many of which are deposited in the National Collection of Viruses of the Republic of Kazakhstan and registered in GenBank. He trained in large foreign laboratories. Specialist in marine mammal diseases, publications in leading virological and environmental journals. Kydyrmanov A.I. obtained data on the circulation of influenza A viruses, morbilliviruses, herpesvirus serotype 1 in the population of Caspian seals.
The main areas of scientific interests are related to the study of ecology, evolution and molecular genetic variability of animal viruses; the study of the role of viruses in infectious pathology and deciphering the causes of mass death of individual representatives of fauna in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Kydyrmanov A.I. is the author of 275 scientific papers, 28 copyrighted inventions and patents. Over the past 5 years, 75 papers have been published, including 14 in foreign publications indexed by Web of Science or Scopus, and 8 patents have been obtained.

Karamendin Kobei Omertaevich – Chief Researcher, Candidate of Veterinary Sciences.
The main areas of scientific research: ecology, evolution, diagnostics of viruses of humans, birds and mammals. Works on mass parallel sequencing of virus genomes of various families have been published. Participation in the decoding of the mass death of saiga in Kazakhstan with the use of mass parallel sequencing of the bacterial and viral metagenome of saiga. Main achievements: in various ecosystems of the Republic of Kazakhstan, he isolated original strains of viruses of different families from birds, humans and animals, studied the peculiarities of their distribution and the main genetic characteristics. He studied bacterial and viral metagenomes, camels, marine mammals, migratory birds and saiga. With the participation of Sasan Fereydouni and Aydin Kydyrmanov, the cause of the mass death of saiga in Kazakhstan was revealed. Together with Kydyrmanov, A. from the laboratory established the causes of death of camels in western Kazakhstan from camel pox and clostridiosis. For the first time, he identified new avulaviruses of avian serotypes APMV-13, APMV-16, APMV-20, previously unknown to science, and a new adenovirus of gulls.

She has been dealing with the problems of wild bird and animal viruses for a long time, identified original strains of influenza viruses, paramyxoviruses and other families, participated in the formation of a collection of mammalian animal and bird viruses in Kazakhstan.

Kassymbekov Ermukhammet Torebekovich – researcher, graduated from PhD-doctorate in the specialty "Veterinary medicine".
Specialist in cryopreservation. Specializes in virus gene screening and sequencing. Participated in the implementation of fundamental and applied scientific projects in the field of monitoring and evolutionary variability of ortho- and paramyxoviruses of wild and domestic birds, owns modern virological, serological, molecular biological and immunological research methods.

- Isolates of influenza A virus subtypes H1, H3, H4, H5, H9, H10, H11, H13, H16 have been isolated and genetically characterized from wild birds of aquatic and near-aquatic complexes. The results have been published in leading international and local virological journals.
- Strains of avian paramyxoviruses of serotypes APMV-1, APMV-4, APMV-6, APMV-8 have been isolated from wild birds in the Republic of Kazakhstan for the first time and new avian PMV serotypes APMV-13, APMV-16 and APMV-20, previously unknown to science, have been identified;
- With active cooperation with leading researchers from the Netherlands and Great Britain, the morbillivirus etiology of the death of Caspian seals in the spring of 2000 was established;
- the evolution of morbillivirus in Caspian seals in 2000 was studied. It is shown that epizootic strains of Caspian seal morbilliviruses belong to a separate cluster originating from a monophyletic group of American strains, which were separated from other groups around 1832;
- In 2011-2015, with the help of mass parallel sequencing, the cause of the mass death of saigas from bacterial infection was confirmed;
- Virological and molecular genetic analysis of bioassays from 16 fish species of reservoirs of Kazakhstan for the presence of viral pathogens (2013-2015) included in the list of diseases of the International Epizootic Bureau for Aquatic Animals was carried out. The possibility of circulation of the causative agent of viral hemorrhagic septicemia in wild fish populations of the Republic is shown;
- A new species of adenoviruses affecting seagull birds in the Northern Caspian Sea has been described and genetically characterized.
- Collection of field material from a wide range of biological species in various natural biocenoses of the Republic of Kazakhstan to characterize the molecular ecology and evolution of vertebrate viruses;
