Center history

The history of the formation and development of microbiology at the Center is inextricably linked with the history of the Institute of Microbiology and Virology of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences, which was established in 1956 on the basis of the Microbiology Sector of the Institute of Botany of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences. The founder of the Kazakh school of microbiology was Doctor of Biological Sciences, Corresponding Member of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences, Professor David Lazarevich Shamis (1902-1972), a well-known specialist in the field of technical microbiology in the Soviet Union. Together with the institute's staff, he studied yeasts used in winemaking and baking and proposed ways to intensify several sectors of the food industry. Under the leadership of D.L. Shamis, a pilot plant for the production of microbiological preparations was created at the Institute of Microbiology and Virology in 1961.
The further development of general and soil microbiology in Kazakhstan is inextricably linked with the name of the outstanding scientist, Academician of the Kazakh SSR Academy of Sciences Alfarid Nizamovich Ilyaletdinov. From 1958 to 2008, under his leadership, two areas of Kazakhstani microbiological science were actively developed: the study of the role of microorganisms in the circulation of organic and mineral substances in nature and the use of microorganisms in feed production.
The history of the development of virological science in Kazakhstan as an independent discipline is inextricably linked with the name of the outstanding virologist, the founder of virological science in Kazakhstan, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, Laureate of the State Prize of Kazakhstan in Science and Technology Khamza Zhumatovich Zhumatov (1912-1972). In 1951 Kh. Zh. Zhumatov organized the first virology laboratory in the Republic of Kazakhstan as part of the Kazakh Institute of Epidemiology, Microbiology and Hygiene of the Ministry of Health of the Kazakh SSR.1955On his initiative, a second virology laboratory was created – «general virology» at the Institute of Regional Pathology of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR, which in1956. was transferred to the newly opened Institute of Microbiology and Virology of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR.

History of creation

LLP «Scientific and Production Center of Microbiology and Virology» traces its history back to January 30, 1956, when the Institute of Microbiology and Virology was founded on the basis of the Microbiology Sector of the Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic in accordance with the Resolution of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR № 13 of 30.01. 1956. Since its founding, the Center has evolved from an academic research institution to a leading Kazakhstani organization, combining fundamental and applied research with its own biotech production.
Founders and Executives

The founder and first director of the Institute of Microbiology and Virology of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences was Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor, and Corresponding Member of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences, David Lazarevich Shamis (1902-1972), an outstanding scientist, educator, and founder of the Kazakh school of microbiology. David Lazarevich Shamis led the team from 1956 to 1963. D.L. Shamis is widely known among microbiologists as a specialist in technical microbiology. He had a significant influence on the development of all major areas of Kazakh microbiology.
